dhal makhani

DHAL MAKHANI or Dhal Maharani as it is called in some Indian restaurants, is a favourite Punjabi Dhaba dish.  It is easy to cook but takes some time to prepare.  This is an ideal dish for a slow cooker or a lazy Saturday afternoon.  The exquisite buttery taste will be well worth the time. Makes 10 – 12 serves.  Suitable for freezing.

shopping list:

  • 1 cup black lentils
  • 1/2 cup kidney beans
  • 400 grams tomatoes
  • 100 g butter
  • 1 lemon
  • 250 g Greek yoghurt
  • fresh cream (optional)
  • 2 stalks fresh coriander leaves


  • butter / oil / ghee
  • ginger
  • garlic
  • 2 onions
